Why do we use activated folate (Quatrefolic Levomefolate glucosamine) in Preconception, Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Support?
Our formula contains 500mcg of Methyl-folate per daily dose.
Approximately 50% of women carry the MTHFR gene, this impacts the body’s ability to convert folic acid into folate.
Activated folate (Quatrefolic levomefolate glucosamine) is an active form of folate which gets converted to Methyl-folate in the body. Using an activated form ensures increased bioavailability (aka improved absorption) and is ideal for those with the MTHFR gene.
Why doesn’t Preconception, Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Support contain iron?
We intentionally left iron out of formula, here’s why:
- We believe iron should be dosed separately based on your specific pathology and requirements throughout preconception, pregnancy and postpartum. (It is common for natal vitamins to contain only small dosages of iron, however in pregnancy our requirements increase. Leaving iron out of our formula gives you the opportunity to supplement iron in a higher dose if it is required).
- Our founder can quite often see women in clinic experiencing constipation or gastrointestinal upset during the first trimester of pregnancy (and iron has been known to contribute to these symptoms) so we opted to leave it out.
- Zinc and iron compete for absorption, zinc is an essential nutrient for preconception health and pregnancy.
When is it best to start supplementing a prenatal?
It is recommended to do 3 months of preconception work prior to actively trying. The preconception period is widely recognised as being very important for your maternal health and the health of your future baby. This ensures that your nutrient levels are sufficient prior to pregnancy.
